Port Hardy to Campbell River 242 km
This was a long and very hilly ride through northern Vancouver Island. Most of the climbs are not very steep but long and it feels like reaching high altitudes although the highest point was only about 430 m above sea level. From the road the views of the waste areas of clear cut were impressive and sad reflections of our constructed needs for resources.
The west coast in many ways appears like a huge tree farm and I often wonderi what these trees are ending up as; houses, furniture, newspaper, toilet paper, toys?
There are only 3 places between Port Hardy and Campbell River where it is possible to buy food or have a coffee and no campsites along the route. So I decided to ride through to Campbell River, and I arrived at 9:15 at night. The campsite full and the office was closed. However, they accommodated me anyway, in their backyard, where my little tarp tent fit under their canopy.
Colleen and Sonja passed me on the way out of town – they headed for Tofino to have a visit with Julia, Olivier and Ugo, and Ugo’s family. We will meet up again in Nanaimo and head for Vancouver together.
